The triumph, which was the Bison’s fifth straight, raised their record to 10-4 overall. The Spartans fell to 1-10 with the defeat.
Bethany dominated this one from the start. A 16-2 blitz to open the game was highlighted by 11 points from senior forward Matt Drahos, including a breakaway dunk to climax the run. The Bison then used a three-point barrage to catapult them to a 62-29 halftime lead. BC canned eight of 13 attempts from deep and defensively, forced 16 Spartan turnovers in the opening stanza.
In the second half, another big run, this one a 13-2 burst, swelled Bethany’s lead to 75-31 with 17 minutes to play. The Bison bombardment from three-point country continued, as sophomore guard Brody Jackson, senior forward Mike Drahos and junior guard Chris Stephens hit triples on consecutive possessions and then Matt Drahos got loose for another dunk to finish the stretch and make it a 44-point lead.
The huge advantage allowed Bison head coach Aaron Huffman to clear the bench, as 14 different players saw action and 13 hit the scorebook. The final margin reached 50 when freshman forward Nate Stoner finished a three-point play with 36 seconds left and BC had their largest win since a 120-67 victory over Thiel College back in 1981.
Just as they did in Saturday’s PAC opening victory at Thomas More College, Bethany’s three four-year seniors led the team in scoring. Matt Drahos dumped in 24 points on eight of nine shooting from the floor and a perfect 6-6 from the line, all in just 17 minutes of action. Mike Drahos finished with 15 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals, while senior guard Josh Polantz hit all three attempts from the arc on his way to 13 points.
The win also pads the threesome’s record as the winningest class in Bethany history, as they now have a record of 63-32 in their four years. Today’s win, coupled with yesterday’s triumph, puts them two games ahead of the class of 1960-64 that went 61-11 during their tenure.
The Spartans were led by guard Nick Munding’s 11 points and seven rebounds.
Having played their final non-conference game, Bethany will return to PAC action for the rest of the season, beginning Wednesday when they host Waynesburg College at 6 p.m. in the first game of a doubleheader with the women’s team.
