Men's Basketball ... Warhawks Remain Alone in First in WIAC
… Win at River Falls to Up Mark to 10-2 Overall
The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater remained alone in first place in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with a 76-65 win over UW-River Falls Saturday afternoon at Karges Gym in River Falls, Wisconsin.
Whitewater built a nine point margin, 25-16 at 7:39 in the first half. River Falls twice closed the margin to two points, 30-28 and 32-30, and it stood at 34-31 Whitewater at the intermission. With the score 42-38 Whitewater 16:19, UW-W went on an 11-0 run to up the gap to 53-28 at 12:51. Senior guard Jeremy Manchester keyed the run with a pair of three-pointers. The only time that the Whitewater’s lead was less than double digits was 70-61 at 1:47.
The Warhawks were led by Manchester’s 22 points, hitting 6 of 8 from three-point range. Also in double figures were sophomore guard Anthony Mlachnik with 16 and senior forward Melvin Williams’ 15 points. Manchester also led UW-W with seven rebounds. For the Falcons, sophomore center Ryan Zylstra equaled Manchester’s 22, also grabbing a game-high nine rebounds. Junior guard Hans Hoeg added 14 points for the Falcons.
The Falcons won the battle on the boards, 34-27, but UW-W hit 10-19 shots from beyond the arc and forced 19 turnovers (while committing 10).
The Warhawks’ next contest will be at UW-Platteville Wednesday, January 11. The next home game for UW-W is set for Wednesday, January 18 at 7:00, with UW-Oshkosh visiting Kachel Gym in Williams Center.
