Sul Ross State 68, Texas-Dallas 63

01/07/06 — Lobos Pull out Five-Point Victory over UT Dallas

ALPINE, Tx.- The Sul Ross Lobos survived an attempted late-game rally by UT Dallas to take a 68-63 conference win over the Comets Saturday at the Gallego Center. (BOX)

Sully held 3 players in double figures led by Sid Hooper’s 30 points, a third- season high. Tury Escobar and Matt Santa Cruz followed with 12 points each in the win. C.J. Acosta posted 6 boards while Jesus Banuelos supplied 5 rebounds.

Sul Ross controlled most of the first half while stretching the spread by 14 points with a 36-22 advantage at the 1:06 mark and a 36-24 lead at the half.

The Lobos kept the lead the entire second period with a game-high 16-point lead with 15:22 left in regulation. The Comets narrowed the gap as UTD pulled within 2 with 40 seconds left in the contest trailing Sul Ross 65-63. Matt Santa Cruz dropped two foul shots while Hooper chipped in another in the closing seconds to put Sully on top for the 68-63 final.

Four players for the Comets were in double figures with Adam Bush posting a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Sul Ross shot 38% from the floor against the Comets (35%-long range) while hitting 17 of 25 free throws, good for 68%.

The Lobos improve to 5-7 for the season and 5-4 in conference play. Sul Ross remains unbeaten at the Gallego Center for the year at 4-0. Sully will face Hardin Simmons next Thursday at home. McMurry will visit the Gallego Center next Saturday.
