Durgin & Payette Key RIC Offensive Attack
Providence, RI—Rhode Island College won its first home game in four weeks in a 76-58 win over Eastern Connecticut in a battle of Little East Conference rivals. RIC led by as many as 22 points in the first half, but the Warriors would not go away. ECSU trimmed RIC’s lead to two points with 4:30 left in the game. RIC freshman guard Tirrell Hill (Bronx, NY) nailed a three-point basket 12 seconds later as part of a 18-2 Anchorman run over the next four minutes to close out the game.
Senior guard Kevin Payette (Woonsocket, RI) posted 16 points, seven rebounds, six assists and two steals in the win. Junior guard Kinsey Durgin (Greenwood, ME) scored a team-high 17 points to go along with four assists, three rebounds and three steals. Freshman forward Kaseem Johnson (New Haven, CT) had nine points and eight boards. Hill, who had eight points, and freshman guard Cameron Stewart (Newport, RI) with four points, both played key roles in the win.
Sophomore guard Kris Johnson (Sturbridge, MA) led Eastern Connecticut with a game-high 18 points on six three-point baskets. Junior forward Leon Martin (Woodbury, CT) posted a double-double with ten points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
In upcoming action, RIC will play at Southern Maine on Tuesday, Jan. 10 at 7:30 p.m. Eastern Connecticut will play at UMass Dartmouth on Tuesday, Jan. 10 at 7:30 p.m.
