Wittenberg 86, Oberlin 51

OBERLIN, Ohio — The Wittenberg Tigers used a 17-point run midway through the first half to get on top and stay on top of the homestanding Oberlin Yeomen, 86-51, in a North Coast Athletic Conference game.

The win, Wittenberg's 37th straight over Oberlin and 29th in a row against the Yeomen in NCAC action, improved the Tigers to 12-1 overall and 3-1 in the conference. Oberlin dropped to 0-12 overall.

After the two teams split the first 20 points in the game, Wittenberg scored the next 17 and eventually moved out to a 46-26 lead by halftime. The lead was at least 17 points throughout the second half.

Wittenberg was led offensivley by freshman wing Tyler Howard, who scored 13 points. Senior post Daniel Russ added 12 points and senior wing Kenny Brady chipped in with 11, a team-high seven rebounds and four assists. For the second straight game, all 16 Wittenberg players in uniform saw at least four minutes of action in the game, and 14 of them found their way into the scoring column. Other outstanding performances off the bench included nine points apiece from freshman guard Gregg Hill and junior wing Billy Bowen and four assists from freshman guard Dan McNeely.

Oberlin became the fifth straight Wittenberg opponent to score 54 points or less against the Tigers, one of the top defensive teams in the nation. The Yeomen was beaten on the boards 41-34, committed 22 turnovers to just eight for Wittenberg, and shot just 36 percent from the field. To add insult to injury, the Tigers matched their season high with 10 three-pointers in a game.

Oberlin, which dressed just eight players for the game, put three players in double figures for scoring. Quinton Spencer and Matt Godwin each scored 16 points to share game scoring honors.
