Maryville (Mo.) 80, Webster 63

ST. LOUIS, Mo. — The Maryville University men's basketball team opened St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) play with an 80-63 victory over defending regular season champion Webster University. The win brings the Saints record to 6-5 overall and 1-0 in conference action, while Webster falls to 1-10 on the season and 0-1 in the SLIAC.
Maryville took the early lead and did not relinquish it for the remainder of the game. The Saints led by as many as 13 points in the first half and took a seven point lead heading into halftime. Head coach Matt Rogers' squad shot 15-of-34 (.441) from the field, 6-of-14 (.429) from three-point range and 5-of-6 (.833) from the charity stripe in the first half, while holding the Gorloks to 39.4 percent shooting from the field.
In the second half, Maryville's shooting accuracy continued to increase, as they shot 12-of-22 (.545) from the field and 5-of-8 (.625) from behind the arc. The Saints, who led by as many as 19 points in the half, held Webster to just 34.4 percent from the field in the second half, as they finished only 36.9 percent (24-of-65) for the game.
Rogers received a strong effort from seniors Ben Hebl, Stephen Bash, Matt Regan and Tim Elwell, while sophomore Casey Holland provided a spark off the bench with 16 points and four rebounds. Hebl finished with a game-high 21 points on 7-of 13 (.539) shooting from the field, 5-of-9 (.556) from behind the arc and 2-of-2 (1.000) from the charity stripe. He also added seven rebounds, four assists and two steals.
Bash recorded his second double-double of the season with 13 points and 11 rebounds, while Regan had 10 points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals. Elwell also contributed to the effort with eight points and a team-high five assists.
Webster was led by Corey Kuhn and Jeff Messman with 19 and 13 points respectively. Benny Roberts grabbed a team-high seven rebounds and dished out a game-high six assists, while Scott Spinner added nine points, five assists, two rebounds and two steals.
Maryville will continue SLIAC action this week on the road, as they travel to Greenville College in Greenville, Ill., for an 8:00 pm contest on Wednesday.
