St. John Fisher 90, Hartwick 64

ONEONTA, NY — Senior guard Mike McGee (Notre Dame HS/Batavia, N.Y.) scored 20 points to lead 20th-ranked St. John Fisher to a 90-64 win over Hartwick in an Empire 8 men’s basketball game at the Binder Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.

Hartwick held tough throughout the first half, and trailed just 38-36 at halftime as Hawks’ freshman guard Jan Cocozziello (New Hampton/Westfield, NJ) scored 19 of his game high 25 points in the opening stanza.

The Cardinals opened the first seven minutes of second half with a 23-7 run to take control of the game. Junior center Dan McSweeney (Marcellus/Marcellus, N.Y.) scored nine points in that span to fuel the Fisher run.

McSweeney finished with 19 and senior guard Pete Gillett (Perry/Perry, N.Y.) added 12 for the cardinals, which improve to 8-2, 2-0 in the Empire 8.

Hartwick falls under .500 for the first time since the season-opener with a 6-7 mark and an 0-2 record in the Empire 8. Cocozziello led Hartwick with his career-high 25 points. Freshman forward Anthony Brown (North Division/Milwaukee, Wis.) added 10 points.

Hartwick will be back in action next Friday, hosting Utica College in a 8:00 p.m. Empire 8 conference game.
