The winners broke to a commanding 65-33 lead at intermission and improved to 7-2 overall and 3-0 in league action while the loss dropped Illinois College to 5-5 on the season and 1-2 in MWC play.
Grinnell’s John Grotberg led all scorers five Pioneers in double figures with a game-high 34 points. His totals include five treys and a perfect 9-for-9 from the line. The hosts got 19 points from Paul Nordlund and 18 from David Arseneault while Mike Schmidt chipped in with 16 and Bobby Long added 10.
Pete Jennings, in only his third start of the season for the Blueboys, connected on 14-of-18 from the field and finished with a team-high 32 points. Freshman Brad Johnson scored a career-best 17 for the Blueboys while Joe Womble and Mark Gillingham added 10 apiece. The visitors posted a 42-38 edge on the boards with Gillingham leading the way with seven boards. Brock Martinez had a game-high eight rebounds for the Pioneers. Illinois College’s Brandon Grimsley had a season-high nine assists.
