Case Western Reserve 76, Emory 68

ATLANTA, GA (January 7, 2006) — Case Western Reserve University improved to 9-3 overall a 1-0 in the University Athletic Association this afternoon in Atlanta, Georgia with a 76-68 victory over Emory University. Senior forward Carson Oren (South Bend, IN) paced the Spartans with his eighth double double of the season. Emory drops to 7-5 and 0-1.

The Spartans pounded the Eagles on the boards in the first half 28-12 and took a 38-25 advantage into the intermission. The Spartans trailed 7-6 at the 15:27 mark, but outscored Emory 32-18 in the remainder of the half. Senior forward Carson Oren (South Bend, IN) grabbed seven rebounds and scored 11 points to lead Case. He finished the game with 11 rebounds and 19 points.

After going down by 20, 51-31 at the 15:01 mark, the Eagles cut Case’s lead to three (65-62) with just under three minutes left in the game (2:53). The Spartans hit 11-of-12 free throws (Oren 6-of-6) down the stretch to secure their conference opener victory. Emory shot just 31.4 percent from the field in the game compared to Case’s 47.8 percent. The Spartans did however turn the ball over 23 times.

Case junior guard Matt Cannan (Dublin, OH), senior guard Funso Lafe (Chesterland, OH) and sophomore center Mason Conrad (Tarpon Springs, FL) also scored in double digits. Cannan had 12, Lafe 11 and Conrad 10. The Eagles had four players in double figures led by sophomore guard Spiros Ferderigos (Oldsmar, FL), who had 17.

Case will host their first UAA double header of the year this weekend with the University of Chicago coming to the Veale Center on Friday for an 8:00 p.m. game and Washington University in St. Louis visiting Cleveland on Sunday for a 1:00 p.m. contest.
