Hamline 83, Augsburg 71

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — Tony Thrasher (Fr., Hustisford, Wis.) had 26 points, hitting 6-of-8 from three-point range, while Kyle Foster (Jr., Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview HS) had a double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds, leading Hamline University to an 83-71 win over host Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's basketball game Saturday afternoon at Si Melby Hall.

Hamline scored the first seven points of the game and led from start to finish, leading 41-29 at halftime and pulling ahead by as many as 20 points in the second half to improve to 5-6 overall, 4-2 in MIAC play.

Augsburg, led by 19 points and nine assists from Justin Koslowski (So., Wausau, Wis./Wausau Newman HS), is now 3-8 overall, 2-4 in MIAC play.

Hamline led by nine points early, but Augsburg trimmed the lead to 23-18 with 7:25 left in the first half. However, a 10-0 run over the next three minutes, keyed by two Thrasher three-pointers, put the Piper advantage in double-digits, 33-18 with 4:50 left in the opening stanza.

After trailing by 20 points five minutes into the second half, Augsburg went on a run of its own -- a 17-4 stretch to cut the lead to four points, 64-60 with 9:10 left. Darren Nelson (So., Richfield, Minn.) and Dan Graf (Jr., Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) had six points apiece in the Auggie run.

However, Hamline then went on an 8-2 run over the next two minutes to put the lead back at 72-62, led by four free throws by Sam Wiener (Jr., Marshall, Minn.). Hamline expanded the lead to 16 points in the closing minutes.

Wiener had 12 points, five rebounds and seven assists for the Pipers, while Kory Kelzer (So., Mayer, Minn./Watertown-Mayer HS) had nine points and seven rebounds. Jon DeRock (Fr., Buffalo Lake, Minn./Buffalo Lake-Hector HS) had five points and six assists.

Hamline hit 51.1 percent (23-of-45) from the field, including going 52.9 percent (9-of-17) from three-point range. The Pipers also converted 28-of-32 free throws and outrebounded Augsburg by a 40-23 margin. Augsburg hit 44.3 percent (27-of-61) from the field and 11-of-17 from the charity stripe.
