The host AmCats controlled the game early, leading by five points on two separate occasions and had a three-point (19-16) lead with 8:12 left in the first half after a basket from sophomore guard Mike Chamberlin (Randolph, Mass.). However, a basket by junior forward Brian Gaine (Braintree, Mass.) followed by a pair of free throws from sophomore guard Sherrad Prezzie-Blue (Norwalk, Conn.) gave Wentworth its first lead, 20-19, with 7:18 left.
After Anna Maria took a 21-20 lead on a basket from sophomore forward Jim Daigneault (Worcester, Mass.), Wentworth got a three pointer from freshman guard Todd Doyle (Mystic, Conn.) and took the lead for good. The trifecta, which came with 6:48 left, started a 16-5 run to close the half. During the run, Wentworth held a lead of as much as 15 points, with Bolton scoring seven points, as the Leopards went into the locker room with a 36-23 lead.
To open the second half, the two teams exchanged baskets and then sophomore forward Rob Fernandes (Taunton, Mass.) upped Wentworth’s lead back to 15 (43-28). However, the AmCats would go on an 11-2 run over the next 4:01 to cut the lead to six (45-39) with 14:04 left. Doyle would stop the run with a basket of his own, followed by a jumper by sophomore guard Jason DaCosta (Cambridge, Mass.) to give Wentworth a 49-39 lead.
Freshman forward Brandon DiTulio (Webster, Mass.) trimmed the lead back to eight with just over 11:00 left, but Anna Maria would get no closer as the Leopards used a 25-4 run over the next 9:20 to break the game wide open and seal their second consecutive victory.
Doyle chipped in with 15 points (on 7-for-10 shooting), while Gaine had 12 points and 10 rebounds to help Wentworth. The Leopards held a 42-30 advantage on the boards and held their hosts to just under 40 percent shooting from the floor for the game.
For the AmCats, sophomore guard Anthony McDonald (Oxford, Mass.) scored 16 points.
The Leopards are back in action Monday night as they head to Arlington, Va., for a non-conference match-up against the Saints of Marymount University. The game will be a homecoming for Bolton and head coach Tom Devitt, who hail from Silver Springs and Gaithersburg, Md., respectively.
