In the Spartan contest, York jumped out to a 13-0 led before Dan Hogan hit a lay up at the 16:05 mark to get LVC on the board. The Spartans maintained their lead in the teens until Quinn Howard hit a pair of free throws to push the lead to 21 at 41-20. York proceeded to outscore Lebanon Valley 13-8 over the final four minutes of the half to take a 54-28 lead to the break.
The Flying Dutchmen began the second half with a 9-3 run to cut the York lead to 20 but the Spartans quickly pushed their advantage back to the mid-20’s. The green and white were clicking on all cylinders as they continued to increase the lead throughout the second half. Freshman Nate Fry hit a trey with 9:04 left to give York a 75-43 lead. The lead grew to 40 on a Shane Beccio free throw with 3:53 remaining. York’s 46-point margin of victory is the largest bulge since the 51 point win over Pitt-Greensburg on December 4, 2000.
York placed six players in double figures led by the senior duo of Kenny Fass and Brandon Bushey as they each had 14 points. Fass added seven rebounds, three assists, three steals and a blocked shot in just 22 minutes. Fass was 6-for-7 from the floor including 2-for-3 from beyond the arc. Bushey tallied his 14 points of 5-of-10 shooting from the floor including 3-for-6 from downtown. He added three rebounds and an assist in a team-high 24 minutes of action. Sophomore Chad McGowan chipped in with 13 points, five rebounds and a steals while senior Brian Singer contributed 11 points, four rebounds, and a blocked shot in the win. The freshman combo of Howard and Fry each tallied 12 points for YCP. Fry was 4-for-6 including 2-for-4 from distance while Howard was 4-for-8 from the floor. Howard was a perfect 4-for-4 from the charity stripe. Senior Paddy Lee made his 18 minutes of action impressive as he grabbed seven rebounds while he dished out seven assists with just one turnover. Junior Joe Yeck established a new career-high as he also handed out seven assists while he also had three steals. Fourteen of the 15 Spartans that saw action in the game scored.
Lebanon Valley received a team-high 12 points from Hogan as he was 5-for-7 from the floor and 2-for-2 from the line. Peter Ruth added six points and a team-high seven rebounds while Dave Kasyan had seven points and six rebounds.
York held the Flying Dutchmen to 31.6% shooting from the floor while Lebanon Valley was just 3-for-14 from three. The Spartans finished the game shooting 50.7% from the floor and 36.7% from distance. Their 11 three point field goals were a season high as were the squad’s 26 assists, 15 steals, and 38 field goals.
The night’s other contest featured a tightly played game between #21 Lincoln and Messiah. The first half featured 12 ties before the Lions forged a 44-40 lead at the half.
Lincoln built their second half lead to 13 at 62-49 on a Kyle Myrick three with 13:40 left in the game. The Falcons fashioned a 26-6 run to take a 75-68 lead with 6:03 left. Lincoln responded in impressive fashion as they put together a game-winning 15-1 run to turn their seven point deficit into an 83-76 lead with 2:02 left in regulation. Messiah’s Steve King hit a lay up with 1:02 remaining to trim the Lincoln lead to 84-81. Myrick split a pair of free throws with nine seconds remaining before Zach Wiernicki hit a cosmetic lay up with one second left to provide for the final two point margin.
Myrick, the top scorer in all of Division III, finished the game with a team-high 25 points while he also had eight assists, three rebounds and two steals. Sami Wylie also played well for the Lions as the guard had 17 points on 5-of-8 shooting from downtown. Wylie was also 2-for-3 from the line in addition to four assists. Tyreek Byard recorded 13 points and four boards while Darryl White had 11 points, four rebounds, and two blocked shots. Brian Leach was the final Lion in double figures with 10 points and six rebounds.
Wiernicki was outstanding in a losing effort as he has a tournament record tying 37 points while he also had 11 rebounds. Jared Yoder added 18 points and 17 rebounds. His 17 boards was just one carom short of tying the tournament record. Quinn McCullough was the third Falcon in double figures with 15 points while he also had six rebounds and five assists.
In Saturday’s action, Lincoln faces Lebanon Valley in the 1:00 pm followed by York and Messiah in the 3:00 pm contest
