Simon records 250th career win, DeMartino takes career assist lead in 81-66 victory
Brandeis women's basketball coach Carol Simon picked up her 250th career win and senior guard Amanda DeMartino (Toms River, N.J.) became the school's all-time leader in assists tonight as the host Judges defeated Carnegie Mellon University, 81-66, in Brandeis's University Athletic Association (UAA) opener.
Brandeis (8-0, 1-0 UAA), ranked No. 2 in the nation by d3hoops.com, won its 11th straight game dating back to last season, the third-longest winning streak in school history. Simon becomes the fourth active coach in the UAA to reach the 250 victory plateau.
DeMartino had two assists at halftime and reached the milestone at the 14:29 mark of the second when she found junior guard Alison Chase (Farmington, Conn.) cutting to the basket for a lay-up. DeMartino finished the night with seven assists to give her 353 for her career, two ahead of Pam Vaughan '90.
The Judges placed four players in double figures, led by a pair of career-highs off the bench. Sophomore guard Courtney Tremblay (Peabody, Mass.) scored 12 points in the first half en route to 17, while rookie forward Lauren Orlando (Peabody, Mass.) matched her for game-high honors with 17 as well. Tremblay hit seven-of-11 from the floor, including three-of-six from beyond 3-point range, while Orlando was six-of-eight shooting with a trifecta to go with four-of-five from the line. The starting frontcourt of senior center Christine Clancy (Yarmouth, Maine) and junior forward Caitlin Malcolm (Windsor Locks, Conn.) each finished with 12 points and nine rebounds, a game-high.
Carnegie Mellon (4-8, 0-2 UAA) put just one player in double figures, senior forward Rebecca Shore (State College, Pa.), who hit her first six shots from the floor en route a 14-point night. Rookie forward Ashley Rothwell (Pittsburgh, Pa.) led the Tartans with six rebounds off the bench.
Brandeis and CMU both continue UAA play on Sunday, when the Judges host Rochester at 3:00 p.m. and the Tartans head to New York University to face the Violets at the same time.
