Chowan 86, Salisbury 78

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Chowan College outscored the Salisbury University men’s basketball team 32-20 in the paint and outscored the Sea Gulls 18-14 on second-chance points Friday night as the Braves knocked off SU 86-78 at the Great Ships Invitational at the Apprentice School.

The lead changed seven times in the game and Salisbury trailed 83-72 with 2:00 remaining in the contest and held the Braves without a field goal for the remainder of the game. But Chowan won the contest despite hitting only 3-of-6 free throws down the stretch, handing the Gulls (6-5) their second loss in three games.

Chowan (4-8) won the contest by hitting 49.3% (35-of-71) from the field, including 60% (18-of-30) in the second half when the Braves outscored Salisbury 49-38 to overcome a 40-37 Sea Gull lead at intermission. The Braves held Salisbury to 40.9% (27-of-66) in the final 20 minutes. The Gulls did hit 11-of-22 from behind the three-point arc.

The lead changed hands 10 times during the game.

Ray Williams led the Salisbury attack with 24 points, his second-highest point total of the season. Williams hit 5-of-8 from behind the three-point arc and 9-of-18 from the field. He also handed out four assists and grabbed four boards. Justin Rice added 17 points on 6-of-10 field goal shooting and 4-of-7 behind the arc. Segun Odumeru dropped in 15 points and Ozi Menakaya scored seven points and pulled down 10 rebounds.

Trayvon Lathan paced the Braves with 22 points on 9-of-18 shooting from the field. He also grabbed nine boards. Aaron scored scored 18 points, Jon Dyer dropped in 16 points and tallied a game-high 11 boards, and Marcus Artis scored 14 points and pulled down nine rebounds.

The Braves outrebounded the Sea Gulls, 43-38.

Salisbury will close out play in the round robin tournament on Saturday when the Sea Gulls face Apprentice School at 3 p.m. Apprentice knocked off College of Misericordia, 64-62, on Friday. Misericordia will take on Chowan at 1 p.m. Saturday.
