Wheaton (Ill.) 76, La Sierra 42

Whittier, Calif. — The Wheaton College men’s basketball team opened its participation at Whittier College’s “Purple and Gold Classic” with a 76-42 win against LaSierra University. The Thunder improves to 4-6 on the season and will face the host Poets of Whittier College on Friday night at 8 PM PST (10 CST).

LaSierra led the Thunder 10-8 with 15:20 left in the first half, when Wheaton put together a 12-1 run to take a 20-11 lead with 12:50 remaining in the first half. The Thunder increased its lead to hold a 43-26 advantage at halftime. LaSierra never got closer than a 19-point deficit in the second half, as Wheaton secured the 34-point victory.

Freshman Dave Noell led the Thunder with a career-high 16 points, all coming in the first half. Noell was 6-for-10 from the field, with four three-point field goals. Senior co-captain Tony Bollier scored 12 points, with a 5-for-8 effort from the field and four rebounds. Michael Fiddler scored nine points, with seven rebounds, four assists and three steals. Sophomore John Mohan scored nine points, with seven assists and Jordan Kemper contributed eight points, with six rebounds. Freshman Andy Wiele scored seven points with seven rebounds.

Terrell Hendricks led the Thunder with 12 points, eight rebounds and three steals. Blaine Smith scored 10 points, with three assists.

Wheaton shot 48.3% (29-60) from the field, including 47.6% (10-21) from three-point range, with a 57.1% (8-14) from the free throw line. LaSierra shot 36.6% (15-41) from the field, with 35.7% (5-14) from three-point range and 63.6% (7-11) at the free throw line. The Thunder out-rebounded LaSierra 38-23, with an impressive 17-8 edge on the offensive glass.
