Mississippi College 74, Texas Lutheran 56

SEGUIN, Texas — Top 25-ranked Mississippi College received 18 points and nine rebounds from Tyler Winford and out-rebounded Texas Lutheran 51-34 in a 74-56 conference victory in TLU’s Memorial Gymnasium.

Mississippi College, ranked 23rd in the latest D3hoops.com poll, improved to 9-1 overall and to 6-1 in the American Southwest Conference.

Texas Lutheran, playing without starters Jason Morales and Hunter Holsonback, fell to 4-6 overall and to 3-5 in the ASC. Morales, the senior point guard, missed the game with an injury. Holsonback was absent with an illness.

Freshman Rion Hamilton started at the point for TLU, and senior post Jerrod Carpenter returned from injury to make his first start of the season.

Carpenter finished the night with 11 points and eight rebounds in 21 minutes of action.

Senior post Brian Alves led TLU with 13 points and seven rebounds.

The Choctaws received minutes from 16 different players, and 11 different Choctaws scored.

Mississippi College held TLU to 34.5 percent shooting in the first half and opened a 39-25 lead at the half. The Bulldogs finished the game at 38.1 percent.

Orlando Lewis and Cedric Armstrong were the other Choctaws in double figures. Lewis scored 16 and had six assists and three steals, and Armstrong added 10 points.

Texas Lutheran continues ASC play this Saturday with a 3 p.m. home game against Louisiana College.
