Men's Basketball ... Warhawks 4-0 in WIAC with Win over Eau Claire
The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater defeated UW-Eau Claire 70-62 in UW-Ws Kachel Gym in Williams Center Wednesday evening.
Whitewater never trailed in the game, and led 35-23 at halftime. The Blugolds used a 14-3 run to start the second half to narrow the margin to 38-37 at 14:00, then after a ten minutes of Whitewater holding as much as a seven point margin, 51-44 at 8:15, UW-EC cut it to one again, 56-55 at 4:30 on two free throws by senior center Tyler Birkel. Still up by four, 66-62 at 0:44, UW-W senior guard Melvin Williams and junior forward Mike Toellner both hit a pair of free throws for the final margin.
Junior center Andy Freund led UW-W with 18 points and a game-high nine rebounds and four steals. Senior guard Jeremy Manchester added 14 points, and Toellner contributed 10. For the Blugolds, it was sophomore guard Zach Ryan with 19 points. Dan Ottney, sophomore forward chipped in with 13 and Matt Riley, junior guard, added 10. Eau Claire committed 27 turnovers in the game, while outrebounding UW-W 41-31. Whitewater went 24-33 from the line and Eau Claire hit 13-20.
Whitewater upped its mark in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference to 4-0, 9-2 overall. UW-Eau Claire is 8-4 overall and 1-3 in league play.
The Warhawks next contest will be to at UW-River Falls on Saturday, January 7 for a conference game beginning at 3 p.m. The next home game for the Warhawks will be Wednesday, January 18 against WIAC foe UW-Oshkosh at 7 p.m. in the Kachel Gymnasium.
