After leading 36-28 at halftime, the tenth ranked Blue Devils (11-2, 4-1) fell behind the Eagles (11-2, 3-2) by as much as eight points in the second half. Fueled by four blocked shots by Jacob Nonemacher in the final six minutes and a couple timely 3-pointers by Adam Chandler and Ryan Stangl Stout pulled to within two points, 59-57, with three minutes remaining.
A Nonemacher jumper a minute later tied the score at 59 all. Stout had several opportunities in the final two minutes as the Eagles turned the ball over twice, but Stout could not convert.
With five seconds remaining, the Eagles' Chris Ask pulled down a critical rebound off a Stout missed shot and La Crosse called timeout. The Blue Devils, with only two team fouls in the second half, attempted to foul to stop the clock, but did not get a call and Owen squared up to hit the game winner from inside the free throw line.
Nonemacher and the Eagles' Joe Werner each finished with 17 points. Nonemacher had eight rebounds and eight blocked shots.
Stout, which shot 44 percent on the night (25-of-57), got 14 points from Terry Farmer and 10 points from Chandler.
The Eagles, which shot 41 percent (25-of-61), got 12 points from Chris Fahrenbach and 11 points from Ask.
