St. Joseph's (L.I.) 86, Mount Saint Vincent 76

PATCHOGUE, NY — Two nights after their finest defensive performance of the 2005-06 season during a 78-71 overtime loss to NYU, Mount Saint Vincent was unable to repeat the effort on Wednesday night, dropping their seventh straight game, 86-76 to St. Joseph’s (LI) during a game played at St. Joseph’s. With the loss, Mount Saint Vincent falls to 3-9 overall and 1-4 in the Skyline Conference.
The Dolphins struggled from the beginning and trailed 37-21 with 7:14 remaining in the first half. However, a 12-0 Mount Saint Vincent run to end the first half made it a 37-33 game. However, an 8-2 St. Joseph’s run to open the second half seemingly put the game away for good. The Dolphins committed 12 of their 16 turnovers during the second half, leading to 14 Golden Eagle points off of turnovers after not allowing a single St. Joseph’s point off of a turnover during the first half. The turnovers, combined with an incredible performance by St. Joseph’s freshman David Acree (Brentwood, NY/Brentwood HS) did the Mount in. Acree scored a game-high 30 points on 11 for 23 shooting, and dished out five assists. Overall, St. Joseph’s (6-5, 1-1 Skyline Conference) converted 11 three-point field goal attempts and outrebounded Mount Saint Vincent 42-38, including a 17-12 edge on the offensive boards.
For Mount Saint Vincent, three seniors combined for 54 of the team’s 76 points as Charles Hernandez (Bronx, NY/Msgr. Scanlan) had an incredible night with a season-high 20 points on 5 for 7 shooting. Hernandez was also 9 for 9 from the free throw line, and he chipped in a team-high six rebounds. Fellow seniors James Mooney (Bronx, NY/Iona Prep) and Greg Casey (Mount Vernon, NY/Blessed Sacrament) each scored 17 points with Casey hitting five of his seven three-point attempts. Overall, Mount Saint Vincent shot an unbelievable 17 for 18 from the free throw line, with Hernandez and Mooney combining for a 14 for 14 effort at the line.
Mount Saint Vincent will look to break the losing streak on Saturday, Jan. 7 when they travel to Centenary for a 4:00 p.m. game. The Dolphins downed Centenary 109-75 at home on Dec. 3.
