Ohio Wesleyan 91, Denison 58

DELAWARE, Ohio — Sophomore post Jesse Jean hit 3 straight baskets to put Ohio Wesleyan ahead to stay and freshman wing Kyle Holliday hit 3 straight baskets to kick off a 10-0 run that helped the Bishops break open a 91-58 North Coast Athletic Conference win over Denison on Wednesday at Branch Rickey Arena.

The game started out as a shooting match between junior post Ben Chojnacki and Denison's Dan Hodgkinson, with Chojnacki hitting the Bishops' first 3 baskets and Hodgkinson sinking the first 4 scores for the Big Red, the last of which tied the game at 8-8.

Jean then hit back-to-back jumpers in a span of 41 seconds and followed with a fast break lay-in to increase the Ohio Wesleyan lead to 14-8 with 13:16 left in regulation time.

Denison closed to within 14-12 on another Hodgkinson bucket and a pair of free throws by Mike Shea, and after junior wing Ted Uritus hit a 3-pointer for Ohio Wesleyan and Denison's Shea McMahon sank a lay-in, the Bishops led by a count of 17-14.

Holliday then hit his 3 straight baskets to start the 10-0 Bishop run, and Chojnacki followed with a pair of lay-ins, the latter giving Ohio Wesleyan a 27-14 lead with 6:21 to play.

The Bishops stretched the lead to 43-22 on Uritus' free throw with :04 left in the half before Denison's Brian Gognat hit a 3-pointer at the first-half buzzer for a 43-25 margin at the intermission.

Gognat hit another 3-pointer early in the second half to bring the Big Red within 43-30, but the Bishops countered with a 9-0 run that included 3 Chojnacki lay-ins and a 3-pointer by senior wing Bryan King to stretch the lead to 52-30, and Denison would come no closer than 19 points during the remainder of the contest.

Chojnacki, who went 8-for-9 from the field, and Jean, who was 8-for-10 on the night, led the Bishops with 16 points apiece. Sophomore post Ryan Rozak grabbed a team-high 6 rebounds and senior guard Ross Rybarczyk dished out a game-high 6 assists.

Hodgkinson led Denison with 23 points on 11-of-12 shooting, while McMahon finished with 10 points. Robb Hern led all players with 8 rebounds and Gognat had a team-high 4 assists.
