JERSEY CITY, NJ — SECOND CHANCES AND COOPER REBOUNDING SPARK KEAN OVER NJCU, 81-72

Kean University used its size to seize a 68-33 rebounding margin (+35), including 33-14 on the offensive glass (+19), and accumulated a 25-9 cushion in second chance points, as the Cougars, behind 28 rebounds from sophomore center Chari’ Cooper (Paulsboro, NJ/Paulsboro), held off a challenge from New Jersey City University, 81-72, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center.

Kean improves to 10-2 overall and 5-1 in the NJAC, while winning for the fourth time in five games. The Cougars are 5-1 on the road. NJCU, playing for the first time in 20 days, falls to 4-5 and 1-5 NJAC.

Junior forward Chi Clark (Maplewood, NJ/Columbia) added a double-double with 20 points (8-14), 14 rebounds and four steals, and 20 more came from junior guard Francine Bell (Orange, NJ/West Side), who shot 7-of-13 from the field and 4-of-6 from three-point land.

Kean opened up an 11-3 lead and continued to hold a multiple possession margin for most of the first half. The Gothic Knights twice climbed with two on jumpers by freshman guard ANDREA YUDIN (Guilford, VT/Brattleboro Union (VT)) at the 2:00 and 1:00 minutes marks, before the Cougars went to the half up 40-36.

A steal by McNair led to a fast-break basket for Clackley at 19:24, and Goodman drilled a three at 18:51, as NJCU went ahead for the first time since the opening minute of the game, 41-40. Another Clackley lay-up made it 43-42 at 16:37, before Bell scored the next seven points of the game, sparked by a three that put Kean back in front 45-43. She extended a lead Kean would not relinquish to 51-46 at 15:00.

A three by McNair shaved the deficit to two, 55-53 at 11:13, before a 9-0 run by the Cougars increased the Kean cushion to 11, 64-53, with 8:58 left. Kean led by as many as 11, four times in the final nine minutes of contest, before prevailing by nine.
