Stone was 8-of-15 shooting from the field, including 5-of-9 from three-point range in the victory. He also recorded four assists moving past Scott Fiedler (1987-91) into fifth place on the all-time list with 300.
Coming off a school-record 17 three-pointers in the Bears’ last game, WU used the three-point shot again to build an early lead. Junior Nick Nikitas, sophomore Danny O’Boyle and Stone each hit triples as the Bears posted a 19-5 lead 13:16 remaining in the first half.
Maryville (5-5) trimmed the lead to 24-18 with 5:17 left, but the Saints would not score the rest of the half. Stone scored 10 of the Bears’ last 11 points, including a deep three-pointer at the buzzer, to give Washington U. the 35-18 halftime lead.
Stone led the Bears with 17 first-half points, as he was 6-of-12 from the field, including 3-of-6 from three-point range. The Bears’ defense forced 16 first-half turnovers, while just committing five.
Stone continued his hot shooting as he nailed two more three-pointers in the first three minutes to push the lead to 45-23. Senior Mike Grunst, who was held to two points in the first half, scored 10 of the Bears’ first 15 points in the second half on 5-of-5 shooting.
Grunst finished with 12 points and one block as he moved past Fred Amos (1981-85) into second place on the all-time list with 153. O’Boyle also scored in double figures with 10 points. Junior Ray Wagner came off the bench in the second half and scored a career-high six points on two-three pointers.
The Bears shot 82.6 percent (19-23) from the free-throw line in the victory. It was the 53rd-straight win when holding their opponents under 60 points.
Washington University (8-3) opens up University Athletic Association (UAA) play at home against the University of Chicago on Sat., Jan. 7. Tip off is set for 3 p.m. at the WU Field House.
