DUBUQUE, Iowa - The Loras College men's basketball team picked up their sixth consecutive win by defeating 14th ranked Wartburg 64-63 at the Fieldhouse on Wednesday night.
Senior Bobby Stineman knocked the basketball away from Jason Steege as Steege was driving towards the basket with just under four seconds left. As he battled for control, Stineman alertly tapped the ball down the court and it went out of bounds with one second remaining. Wartburg had time to get off a shot, but Nick Gullickson's three pointer missed to the right.
Wartburg led 50-49 with 11:37 to play and never led from there as Loras for the final 11 minutes of a game that featured four ties and seven lead changes. The Duhawks built a 10-point lead at 62-52 with 6:05 to play, but the Knights stormed back into the game thanks to a 9-0 run.
Sophomore Kyle White stole the show in the games final moments as he grabbed several key rebounds to help preserve the victory. White grabbed a game high 11 rebounds and aslo score 18 points. Greg King and Brian Centella were also in double figures with 12 and 10 respectively. The Duhawks shot 52 percent for the game and also outrebounded the top rebounding team in the Iowa Conference with a smaller lineup 37-26.
Wartburg (8-2, 1-1), who had their seven game win-streak snapped, was led by Jason Steege's 20 points. At times Steege seemed ready to take over the basketball game, but cooled off down the stretch. Nate Schmidt, the 2004-05 Iowa Conference Player of the Year, was the only other Wartburg player to score in double figures, registering 11.
The Duhawks (8-3, 1-1) will return to action on Saturday afternoon as they meet Buena Vista University at 4:00 p.m. The Beavers are unbeaten in their first two conference games.
The win by the men capped a sweep of Wartburg by the Duhawks. The JV men's team scores a 67-63 win that was followed by the women's 64-55 victory over the Knights. The games will be rebroadcast on Thursday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. through the Loras website beginning with the women's contest.
