Greensboro 60, Eastern Mennonite 56

HARRISONBURG, Va. — Senior Steve Berg and junior James Newman had 19 and 17 points respectively to lead Greensboro College to a 60-56 victory over Eastern Mennonite University in non-conference men’s basketball action on Wednesday night in Harrisonburg, Va.

GC (4-7) had previously fallen to EMU (5-5) in the Bridgewater Don Glick Invitational on Dec. 26 by a score of 83-72. The teams battled through 16 lead changes with the Pride taking the lead for good on a Michael McDuffie (West Patterson, N.J.) field goal with 1:42 remaining.

After a missed lay-up by EMU sophomore Korey Whiting (Stafford, Va.), Newman (Burlington, N.C.) added a three-pointer to extend the lead to 57-53. Berg (Ocala, Fla.) added 1-of-2 free throws before EMU forward Jason Sager (Edinburg, Va.) hit a three-pointer, his only field goal of the game, to pull the Royals within two. Newman added two more free throws and a late three by junior JoMorrae Gordon (Oakdale, Calif.) missed to seal the Pride victory.

Berg scored a game-high 19 points on 6-of-12 shooting, including 5-of-11 from the three-point arch. He has led the Pride in scoring in all three games since becoming eligible after transferring from Division II Eckerd College. He is now shooting 13-of-24 (54%) from the three-point arch for the season. He also had five boards and four assists against EMU.

Newman added 17 points, three boards and two assists for Greensboro. Junior forward Bryant Camp (Asheboro, N.C.) added 10 points and four boards while senior forward Brian Holloway (Raleigh, N.C.) added two points and 11 boards.

Whiting led the Royals with 15 points along with seven boards, two assists, and two steals. EMU shot just 28.6% from the floor, including 3-of-15 from long range. The Royals stayed in the game by going to the free throw line 27 times, converting 21 attempts. Greensboro shot 38.5% from the floor and went 12-for-16 from the charity stripe.

EMU resumes Old Dominion Athletic Conference action on Saturday with a 7 p.m. home game against the Hornets of Lynchburg College.
