Shenandoah 84, Davis and Elikins 71

Elkins, W. Va. - — ELKINS, W. Va. – Shenandoah University opened its second semester with a victory for the first time in three seasons Wednesday night with an 84-71 victory over Division II Davis and Elkins College.

Homestanding D&E (3-9) got a game-high 32 points from guard Bobby Alexander, but the Hornets domination of the glass carried SU to victory.

Shenandoah (7-2) outrebounded the Senators 48-21, including 24-11 in the final 20 minutes of play. Junior Onyie Onunaku led this performance with a game-high 11 rebounds while Moutkar Fawehinmi and Jeremiah Lawrence each had eight.

Despite the rebounding advantage the Hornets needed a 14-2 run over the final 5:32 of the contest to clinch the victory. Leading 70-69 following a pair of Brandon Macon free throws at the 6:15 mark, Shenandoah preceded to score the next 14 points of the ballgame to erase any thoughts of a D&E victory. The Senators final score of the night came on a Brett Rector layup with two seconds left.

Sophomore Steven Johns led the visitors with 17 points while Onunaku added 14 along with his 11 boards and two blocks. Fawehimni and Antwon Townsend rounded out the double digit scorers with 12 points each.
