Carthage 135, Grinnell 123

KENOSHA, Wis. — The Carthage College men’s basketball team (4-7, 0-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) closed out its non-conference schedule on Wednesday, Jan. 4 with a 135-123 win over Grinnell College (6-2) at the Carthage Physical Education Center in Kenosha, Wis. Carthage led by six points at halftime, 63-57. In the second period, the Red Men took a 10-point lead, 67-57, at 19:35 before the Pioneers came back to take a one-point lead, 86-85, at 13:53. Following a pair of ties, Carthage took the leas for good, 92-90, at 12:47 and went on to win by 12 points, 135-123. The Red Men shot 63 percent (55-of-88) and did not attempt a single three-point field goal. Grinnell shot 43 percent (38-of-89), including 20-of-61 from three-point range. Six Carthage players scored in double figures. Brian Schlemm had a career-high 32 points on 13-of-25 field goals, six-of-eight free throws, a game-high and career-high 15 rebounds and six assists. Mark Morrison had 24 points and seven rebounds, Kyle Jeffery 24 points and five rebounds, Chris Lee 16 points, Billy Jacklin 12 points, and Keena Johnson added 10 points and six assists. Scott Hood totaled nine assists for the Red Men. John Grotberg topped Grinnell with 29 points, including six-of-13 three-pointers, while David Arsenault had 21 points. Five Carthage game records were broken. Carthage set a game record with 135 points, breaking a mark of 120 set against Milton College in 1970. The two teams combined for 258 points, breaking a mark of 236 set against Millikin University in 1971. Carthage’s 55 field goals broke a record of 50 set in that 1970 Milton contest. Grinnell’s 61 three-point field-goal attempts broke Beloit College’s 1993 game record of 43, and the Red Men's 40 assists broke a mark of 35 set against Taylor University-Fort Wayne in 1999. Carthage opens its CCIW-schedule on Saturday, Jan. 7 by playing host to No. 1 Illinois Wesleyan University, also at the Carthage PEC (7:30 p.m.).
