Anderson 74, Mount St. Joseph 69

ANDERSON, Ind. - — The Anderson University men's basketball team defeated Mt. St. Joseph 74-69 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference opener on Wednesday at O.C. Lewis Gymnasium.

J.D. Clampitt led three Ravens in double figures with 20 points and six rebounds, making 8-of-14 field goals, including three 3-pointers. Lloyd DeLoatch had 17 points, six rebounds and three assists, hitting 7-of-9 field goals and a pair of 3-pointers.

Nick Rogers recorded a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds to go with three blocks and two assists, including five offensive boards.

The Ravens shot just under 50 percent from the field, hitting 29-of-60 shots. The Lions also finished at 49 percent from the field.

AU won the battle of the boards 37-31 and had one fewer turnovers (12-11) and one more assist (15-14).

AU led 14-3 just four minutes into the game and had its biggest lead of the game at 34-17 with just five minutes left in the half. However, the Lions used a 12-4 run to cut the deficit to 38-29 at the half.

Mt. St. Joseph scored the first seven points of the second half to close to within 38-36. The Lions would get as close as 44-43 with 14 minutes left in the game, but a 16-5 AU run pushed the lead back to 12 points with six minutes left.

The Mount made one final run using a 16-6 run, but they could only get as close as 66-64 with two minutes left in the game. A couple of free throws by Clampitt and Rogers and a layup by DeLoatch pushed the lead back to six and sealed the victory.

AU (6-6, 1-0 HCAC) travels to Transylvania on Saturday at 3 p.m.
