Redlands 126, Wheaton (Ill.) 123

Redlands, Calif. — The Wheaton College men’s basketball team returned to action after a three-week break, losing by a score of 126-123 at the University of Redlands on Tuesday night. Wheaton falls to 3-6 on the season and Redlands is now 4-6.

Wheaton and the Bulldogs combined to score 249 points in tonight’s up-tempo track meet, setting a new Thunder team record for combined points. The previous record for combined points was set on Feb. 29, 1996 when Wheaton defeated Grinnell 131-117 in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Tournament.

Redlands led the Thunder 60-58 at halftime of contest. The Bulldogs started the second half with an 11-5 advantage to give the hosts their biggest lead of the game with an eight-point bulge at 71-63 with 18:13 left in the second half. Wheaton quickly countered with a 10-0 run to take a 73-71 lead with 16:27 remaining in the game. Wheaton led 102-100 with 6:00 left to play when the Thunder went on an impressive 16-3 run that gave the guests the biggest lead of the game at 116-105 with 3:42 to play in the contest. Redlands then countered with a 21-7 over the final 3:30 of the came to emerge with the victory. Wheaton freshman Dave Noell stole the Bulldogs’ inbounds pass with four seconds left in regulation and alertly stepped outside the three-point arc to attempt a shot that would have tied the game, but the shot fell just short as Redlands escaped with the victory.

Senior co-captain Jordan Kemper set career-highs with 38 points and 16 rebounds to record a “double-double” for Wheaton. Sophomore guard John Mohan scored 17 points, on 6-for-7 shooting from the field, including 3-for-4 from three-point range. Mohan also added eight rebounds and six assists. Senior co-captain Tony Bollier scored 17 points, with a career-high 12 assists, six rebounds and five steals. Junior Michael Fiddler scored 17 points on 7-for-9 shooting from the field, while freshman center Andy Wiele scored 15 points.

Ted Hull led Redlands with 31 points and Ryan Pelo added 22 points for the Bulldogs. Amir Mazarei added 18 points for the hosts. Ryan Hall led Redlands with nine rebounds.

Wheaton shot 64.9% (48-74) from the field, including 63.6% (7-11) from three-point range with 76.9% (20-26) from the free throw line. Redlands posted a 39.4% (43-109) field goal percentage, with 36.7% (29-79) from three-point range and 73.3% (11-15) from the free throw line. Wheaton out-rebounded Redlands 54-44, however, the Bulldogs held a 25-11 edge on the offensive glass.
