Penn State-Behrend 78, Allegheny 64

ERIE, Pa. — The Allegheny College Gators (5-5) started the 2006 portion of their season on the wrong foot, with a 78-64 loss to the Lions of Penn St. Behrend on Tuesday evening.

Casey" class="red" rel=nofollow>http://www.allegheny.edu/athletics/menbb/0506/images/mccloskey22.jpg">Casey McCloskey (Erie/Cathedral Prep), playing in front of a large home crowd scored 13 points while Ryan Hollihan (Saxonburg/Knoch) matched 13 in the losing effort.

In a game which had very little rhythm due to 48 total fouls in the contest, the Gators fell behind to start the contest, and were unable to climb back into a lead for the remainder of the game. The Blue and Gold closed to within five halfway through the second stanza, but a late Behrend run put the hosts ahead by double digits for the remainder of the contest.

McCloskey, Hollihan and Ben Torsney (Morgantown, W.Va.), who added 10 points, were the only Gators in double figure scoring, as leading scorer Matt Majzlik (Monaca/Hopewell) was held to single digits for the first time this season, scoring eight points which is a far cry from his 21.4 point per game average, in large part to early foul trouble as he played just 16 minutes in the contest. Hollihan pulled down a team-high nine rebounds. Brad Witucki (Natrona Height/Highlands) dished out a team-high four assists off of the bench for the Gators.

Penn St. Behrend (7-2) was led by Kevin Buczynski, who scored 22 points while J.J. Ferguson added 19 off of the bench, while Tom Newman missed a double-double by a rebound, with 11 points and nine boards.

The next games for the Blue and Gold are on Friday, January 6 and 7, as the team travels to Crawfordsville, Indiana, to face off against the Little Giants of Wabash College on Friday evening, before traveling to Richmond, Indiana to play in a women’s/men’s double header hosted by the Quakers of Earlham College on the 7th.
