Eastern 74, Delaware Valley 72

DOYLESTOWN, Pa. — David Volpe hit a running layup while being fouled with just 1.3 seconds remaining to give Eastern University a 74-72, come-from-behind victory at Delaware Valley College in a non-conference game.

The game was tied at 72-72 with 19.6 seconds remaining following a pair of free throws by Eastern’s Lenny DiMaria. The Aggies (2-8) came down the court and Dominque Brown missed an open jumper with about eight seconds remaining. After a battle for the rebound, Chris McMonagle came down with the defensive board and quickly passed to Corey Copeland. Copeland then found a streaking Volpe who went in and hit his shot despite the contact. Volpe missed the ensuing foul shot, but Delaware Valley could not get a shot off before the buzzer sounded.

The Aggies came out flying in the contest as they hit nine of their first 13 shots, including five from 3-point land, and took a 21-8 lead with 12:51 remaining in the half. Ryan Walsh had nine points in the run, all on treys, to key the spurt.

Delaware Valley still held an 11-point lead, 28-17, with 7:23 to go. However, Eastern (7-2) scored 14 of the final 21 points of the half and trailed by just four, 35-31, at the break.

The Eagles scored the first five points of the second stanza to take their first lead of the game. It was then a back and forth contest that saw eight ties and 11 lead changes. The Aggies’ last advantage was 72-70 following a pair of free throws by Brown with 31 seconds remaining.

Brown and Zack Van Dyke paced the Aggies with 13 points apiece. Van Dyke also added a game-high nine rebounds and four assists. Walsh finished with 11 points while Isaiah Pinckney added 11 points and six assists.

DiMaria notched a game-high 27 points for Eastern. McMonagle added 10 points while Volpe had seven points, including the game-winner.
