UW-Stevens Point 73, Viterbo 52

STEVENS POINT, Wis. — Apparently a return to the Quandt Fieldhouse was the perfect cure for the UW-Stevens Point men’s basketball team.

Entering Monday’s game with a rare two-game losing streak and coming off six straight road games, the Pointers hit 14 of their first 18 shots and jumped out to a huge lead in a 73-52 win over Viterbo for their 26th consecutive home victory.

While neither team had a turnover in the first 10 minutes of the game, Viterbo as cold from the field as the Pointers were hot. The V-Hawks missed their first seven shots from the field as UW-Stevens Point scored the first 12 points of the game. Leading 29-11 midway through the first half, the Pointers went on a 13-1 run to take a 42-12 lead with 2:43 left. UW-Stevens Point’s biggest lead of the game was its 47-16 halftime advantage.

Viterbo shot just 16.7 percent in the first half, while the Pointers shot 61.5 percent and held a 24-7 rebounding advantage. The V-Hawks heated up after halftime, shooting 50.0 percent in the second half and using a 9-0 run to close to within 17 points at 65-48 with 4:25 left, but came no closer in the final minutes.

UW-Stevens Point shot 51.9 percent for the game and is now 8-0 when shooting better than 40 percent and 0-4 when below that figure.

The Pointers had a balanced scoring attack as Steve Hicklin scored 15 points and Jon Krull added 13 points. Kyle Hines scored 15 points to lead Viterbo.

UW-Stevens Point plays Wednesday at UW-Superior at 7 p.m.
