The Knights (5-5, 2-3 MIAC) shot 56 percent in the contest in beating the Gusties for the second time in the last three meetings.
Gustavus (7-2, 2-2 MIAC) was led by Andrew Olson’s 23 points. Phil Sowden added 15 points and six rebounds while Adam TeBrake and Trevor Wittwer tallied 12 and 11 points, respectively, for the Gusties who shot an even 50 percent from the field.
Jake Phillips added 11 points, knocking down his 100th career three-pointer to become only the 10th Carleton player to reach the mark. Tommy Drake added 11 points, five rebounds and three assists for the Knights, who held a 31-26 rebounding edge and outscored the Gusties 34-24 on points in the paint.
The Knights started fast, hitting on six of their first nine shots while holding the Gusties without a field goal for the first seven minutes of the game to lead 16-3. The Gusties responded by hitting on five consecutive shots, including triples from Wittwer and Mike DesLauriers and a three-point play from Wittwer to pull within one at 22-21. Carleton bumped the lead back to eight with a quick 7-0 spurt, capped by a Forkrud fast-break basket, but the Gusties closed the half on a 9-0 spurt, seven coming from Olson, to lead 30-29 at the break.
The Gusties scored the first basket of the half on a Sowden jumper for their largest lead of the game, but Carleton outscored Gustavus 16-5 over the next five-plus minutes, as Johnson scored five points and Forkrud four during the stretch. The Knights stretched the lead to 13 points at the five-minute mark and made 5-of-8 from the line to hold off the Gusties.
Carleton held a 31-26 rebounding edge, including an 18-8 spread in the final 20 minutes. It marked only the second time this season the Knights outrebounded an opponent. Carleton forced 16 Gustie turnovers and owned a 19-14 edge in points off turnovers.
The Knights wrap up the short two-game home stand by hosting Concordia-Moorhead on Wednesday, Jan. 4 at 8 p.m. as part of a women's/men's doubleheader. The Knights close out the week at Macalester on Saturday, Jan. 7 at 3 p.m. Both games can be heard on KQCL 95.9 FM locally and worldwide on Knights Online.
