Maryville (Mo.) 90, Westminster (Mo.) 65

ST. LOUIS, Mo. — The Maryville University men’s basketball team will get a chance to compete in the NCAA Division III tournament next week from their 90-65 pounding over Westminster College in today’s SLIAC conference championship. The Saints have not won a conference tournament title since 1997.

Just two weeks ago, the Blue Jays shot lights out against the Saints in Westminster’s 87-71 victory. Today was Maryville’s turn as the Saints drained three-pointer after three-pointer, finishing .733 (11-for-15) at the three-point arc in the first half. Though their shooting percentage would stagger in the second half, Maryville made up for it on the boards, out rebounding the Blue Jays and giving them few chances for put-backs.

Maryville’s scoring duo Matt Regan and Ben Hebl were back in action as they each scored 16 points in the win. Regan and Hebl finished 3-for-5 and 4-for-6 respectively from behind the three-point arc. Tim Elwell continued to show his range tonight as he sank three huge three’s during the contest, adding to his 14 points while also dishing out a game-high seven assists.

Ryan Klein was the fourth starter in double figures with 11 points and also grabbed a game-high nine rebounds. Stephen Bash added nine points, seven rebounds, and four assists.

Westminster’s Andrew Buxton led all scorers with 21 points. Teammate David McDorman was the only other Blue Jay in double digits and finished with 16 points and three rebounds.

The Saints now prepare for their NCAA appearance late next week. The time and place are yet to be announced.
