Norwich 85, Emerson 76

Northfield, Vt — The Norw9ich University Cadets won their second straight Great Northeast Athletic Conference title and earned their second consecutive NCAA Tournament bid with an 85-76 win over the Lions at Andrews Hall. Norwich improves to 20-7 on the season, while Emerson finished the 2005-06 season at 14-14.

NU opened the game with a 15-6 run over the first six minutes of play. Emerson’s Will Dawkins cut that lead down to three with back-to-back three pointers. The Lions later tied the game at 17-17 with 11:38 before halftime, the only tie of the game. The Cadets were leading 29-25 with 5:37 to play ! when they reeled off an 11-0 run to take a 40-25 lead at the half.

In the second half, Norwich went up by 20 points early on when the Lions roared back with a 21-9 run to trail by eight, 72-64, with 6:19 to play. That’s as close as Emerson would get for the remainder of the game.

Five Norwich players finished in double digits with Jerrold Williams leading th! e pack with 22 points. Geoff Hensley and Jamel Bedford each scored 16 points, while Rene Cheatham and Brian Dumond each added 10 points.

Dawkins led four Emerson players in double figures with 21 points. Alfredo Tovar scored 19 points, while Steve Georgoulis and Morales Hendricks chipped in 16 and 10 points, respectively.

Norwich won the rebounding battle, 47-35! . Dumond topped the Cadets with 11 boards, while Georgoulis led the Lions with eight rebounds.
