The Vikings, who improved to 24-0 and are the last unbeaten team left in men's college basketball, won the tournament title for the third consecutive season.
All-America forward Chris Braier recorded game highs of 21 points and 12 rebounds. Ryan Kroeger added 14 points for the Vikings before fouling out, and senior Ben Klekamp played one of the finest games of his career en route to scoring 11 points.
Jason Scheper and James Johnson led Carroll (21-4) with 15 points apiece, and Paul Toshner added 10.
It was all Pioneers for much of the first half, as Carroll led 19-6 with 12:31 left in the opening half. Carroll led by 12 at 32-20 with 2:28 left when Braier hit a big 3-pointer. Klekamp followed with another 3-pointer, and Lawrence had trimmed the lead to 32-26.
Carroll recovered and took a 36-28 lead to the locker room. It was only the third time this season Lawrence had trailed at the half.
The Pioneers took their biggest lead of the second half at 40-30 on Scheper's layup with 16:37 left.
Lawrence finally drew even when the Vikings scored eight consecutive points. Chris Page got a layup off a beautiful pass from Kroeger, who followed that by hitting back-to-back 3-pointers to tie the game at 42-42.
The Vikings then took their first lead of the game when Braier got a layup to tie the score at 44-44, and following a Carroll turnover, converted a free throw to put the Vikings up 45-44.
Following the fourth, and final, tie of the game at 53-53, Kroeger hit a pair of free throws with 3:23 left that put the Vikings ahead to stay. Braier hit two more free throws with 3:09 left, and Klekamp finished the 7-0 run with a 3-pointer with 2:37 left that put the Vikings up 60-53 and nearly blew the roof off Alexander Gymnasium. Klekamp scored eight of his 11 points in the final 6:41.
Carroll was able to cut the lead to 65-62 with 51 seconds left and had the ball, but Braier forced Scheper to turn the ball over with 12 seconds left.
Ben Rosenblatt knocked down two free throws with 11 ticks remaining to give the Vikings a 67-62 edge and seal the win.
Lawrence will play in the NCAA Tournament for the third consecutive season and the fourth time in school history. The Vikings will learn Monday morning when, where, and whom they will play.
