Catholic 79, Salisbury 70

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Salisbury men’s basketball team (15-13), after knocking off fourth-seeded Gallaudet and stunning top seed York, succumbed to defeat Saturday afternoon at the hands of the Cardinals of Catholic University, 79-70.

In the first half, Salisbury kept it close with Catholic, as they kept the Cardinals from running away with it early. After falling behind 11-3 in the first four minutes, Ray Williams ignited a 12-4 run over the next seven minutes to tie the score at 15. At the 3:05 mark, Salisbury took a three-point, 24-21 lead on a Williams three-pointer. Catholic would close the first half with a 10-2 run led by Patrick Dwyer and Pat Satalin to take a 31-26 lead into halftime.

In the second half, the Cardinals gained momentum and outscored the Sea Gulls 48-44 to capture the CAC crown. Catholic would stretch the lead to as high as 14 with 3:20 left in regulation, 68-54. Salisbury would outscore Catholic, 16-11, over the final three minutes, but it was not enough.

Williams scored 25 points on 9-of-19 shooting with four rebounds and three assists. Segun Odumeru contributed 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting with three steals. Justin Rice led Salisbury in bench-scoring with six points on 1-of-4 shooting.

The Cardinals had three players reach double figures, with Satalin leading the team with 25 points on 5-of-14 shooting and also hit 11-of-12 free throws, pulled down six rebounds, and recorded three assists. Dwyer scored 24 points on 6-of-14 shooting and led the team with 16 rebounds. Scott Fumai scored 10 points, hitting 7-of-8 free throws.

For the game, Salisbury shot 50.0% (26-of-52) for the game, besting Catholic’s 31.5% (17-of-54) from the floor. Catholic won the rebounding advantage, 44-31, while Salisbury was hurt by 17 Catholic points off of 10 turnovers.

The Sea Gulls will now await Selection Sunday tomorrow to await their fate in regards to the NCAA Division III tournament. With the win, Catholic is assured a position in the tournament as an automatic bid for winning the Catholic Athletic Conference crown.
