In Maryville’s match, the Saints jumped to an early 10-0 lead and kept the Gorloks scoreless during the first four minutes of the game. However, Webster fought to come back and kept the game within five points for most of the first twenty minutes. With only two minutes left in the first half, Maryville’s Tim Elwell and Mike Turpen each hit a huge three-pointer to help the Saints pull away and lead 44-34 at half.
A couple more three’s by Matt Regan and Ben Hebl at the start of the second half gave Maryville a jump start to put them up by 13. Minutes later, Ryan Klein’s hand was all one unfortunate Webster player saw as Klein recorded a monster block to get the Maryville fans up on their feet and keep the Saints rolling. For the remainder of the game, Webster did their best to cut their deficit but could never quite catch the Saints. At three minutes left in the game, the Gorloks looked as though they had a chance to steal the lead as they were only down by two, but Regan once again sealed the game, scoring the Saints’ last five points and bringing the game out of Webster’s reach for good.
Tonight’s game was all about the squad’s five starting seniors, all of which scored in double figures and put forth a tremendous effort in the win. Leading this senior pack was Regan, who not only clinched the win, but also led the Saints with 18 points, including a flawless 10-for-10 at the free throw line.
Maryville’s big man Stephen Bash took charge on the boards as he pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds while adding 13 points to record his third double-double this season.
Ben Hebl had another great game from the field as he sank four of his six attempts behind the three-point arc (.667) to put towards his 14 points for the night. Rounding out the offensive end were Tim Elwell and Klein with 10 points a piece.
According to Maryville head basketball coach Matt Rogers, “The key in tonight’s win came from the squad’s strong presence on the boards. Our guys did a great job of rebounding tonight and gave Webster very few second chances to score.”
Maryville will now get ready to travel back to Blackburn this Saturday for a 3 pm tip-off against Westminster for the championship. Tickets will once again be on sale in the Athletics Office all day Friday. $3 for adults…$1 for students…Free for Maryville students.
