Washington College 85, Muhlenberg 79

CHESTERTOWN, Md. — Junior forward Joey Breslin scored a game-high 29 points and senior forward Jonathan Webb poured in 22 points as host Washington College defeated visiting Muhlenberg, 85-79, in the first round game of the Centennial Conference Men's Basketball Tournament this evening at Cain Athletic Center.

Muhlenberg (14-12) held a 42-38 lead at the break after shooting 57% from the field in the first half. The Shoremen (13-13) knotted the score at 58-58 with 13:18 to play in the second, but the Mules scored the next four points to retake the lead. Washington tied the score again at 62-62 with 11:06 to play on a lay-up by senior forward Scott Polyniak. Muhlenberg answered with a 5-0 spurt, capped off by a lay-up from Justin Fields that gave the Mules a 67-62 advantage with 8:33 remaining.

The Shoremen then ran off a 10-0 run to take the lead for good as a free throw by Webb put the Shoremen in front, 72-67, with 5:45 to go. A lay-up by Tom Scott and two free throws by Chris MacIntosh trimmed the lead to 72-71 one minute later. Washington countered with an 8-2 run, capped off by a three-pointer from senior guard Dustin Abbate with 3:28 on the clock that pushed the margin to 80-73. Washington led by at least four points the rest of the way.

Breslin scored his 29 points on 10-of-19 shooting from the field and 9-of-11shooting at the free throw line. Webb scored his 22 points on 8-of-17 shooting from the field and 5-of-7 shooting from the line. Breslin and Webb also shared game-high rebounding honors with 10 boards a piece. Senior guard Drew Hill added eight points and four assists, while Polyniak also finished with eight points.

Chris Huber led Muhlenberg with 20 points on 8-of-16 shooting, scoring 18 of those points in the first half. Scott and Jimmy O'Brien added 14 points a piece. Scott also pulled down seven rebounds, while O'Brien dished out four assists.

Muhlenberg shot 54% from the field in the game, while Washington shot 43%, but the Shoremen committed six fewer turnovers (11 to Muhlenberg's 17) and grabbed 17 offensive rebounds to Muhlenberg's 10.

The Shoremen will play top seed and host Ursinus College in the Centennial Conference semifinals Saturday at 1:00 p.m. Gettysburg and Johns Hopkins will play in the other semifinal, also at Ursinus, at 3:00 p.m.
