The Corsairs made 64.9 per cent of their shots from the field, raced to a 44-35 halftime lead and went on to defeat host Plymouth State, 98-69, in a first round Little East Conference playoff game at the John C. Foley Gymnasium Tuesday evening.
Junior guard Devon Maiorano led the way with a record-breaking effort, Maiorano’s 29 points included nine three-point field goals. The previous mark of eight in a game was set by Aaron Lee against Eastern Connecticut State during the 1992-93 season.
Maiorano hit a pair of three-pointers as the Corsairs took a commanding lead early in the second half, using a 10-2 run to make it 54-39, UMD, with 15:51 to play. Junior center Dan Holbrook added a layup and a jump shot during the run.
“We got some open looks, and we made our shots,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Brian Baptiste. “They came at us with a half court trap in the second half, and we stuck Devon in the corner, and he kept on shooting threes, and he kept on making them. Danny made some shots inside, and Steph (junior forward Stephane Abelard) had a good game as well. I was very happy with our effort. We were diving on the floor for loose balls, and we shot the ball well on the road, which is something we haven’t done well before.”
Four Corsairs joined Maiorano in double figures Abelard had 16 points, Holbrook and sophomore guard A.J. Tavareseach had 12, and junior forward Paul Pawlowski added 11. Abelard also had seven assists. Brandon Boggs led Plymouth State with 21 points, and Kevin Boutilier added 15. Senior center Charlie Large had 10 rebounds as the Corsairs out rebounded the Panthers, 37-22 and made 64.9 per cent of their shots from the field to PSU’s 46.6 per cent.
UMass Dartmouth improved to 15-11 with the victory, while Plymouth State dropped to 16-10 with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit top-seeded Keene State, a 79-59 victor over Southern Maine, Friday evening in a Little East Conference semi-final playoff game. The winner of Friday night’s game will play for the championship on Saturday, also at Keene State.
