Things went in the wrong direction for the Blue and Gold right from the start, as Ohio Wesleyan’s lead was at 16 nine minutes into the contest. The Bishop lead grew to as many as 36 points in the half, and ended at 65-34 going into the locker room.
The Gators were out-rebounded by eight in the first half, and were out-shot as well, as Ohio Wesleyan hit a blistering 68.6% (24-of-35) of its shots in the first stanza. The Blue and Gold shot well, converting on 13-of-28 (46.4%) shot attempts, but were unable to keep pace with their host.
In the second half of the contest the Gators never climbed back within 25 points, and failed to score over the last five minutes in the 39-point loss, the team’s worst of the season. Ohio Wesleyan ended the game with a 60.3% (41-of-68) shooting effort compared to Allegheny’s 46.4% (26-of-66).
While the Gators did not end the year on a high note, the season was a positive one for the Blue and Gold. The team upped its win total by three from a year ago, saw senior Matt Majzlik move into seventh place all-time in career scoring at Allegheny, and nearly upset of nationally ranked Wittenberg at home in the David V. Wise Center.
Allegheny moves into the offseason knowing it loses just one starter (Majzlik) and two other players to graduation. The team will return seven of its eight top scorers and six of its top seven rebounders.
