In the final match-up of the three-day women’s basketball round robin, the Chapman University Panthers defeated the University of Dallas Lady Crusaders, 55-53.
The hype surrounding the game between the two division 3 independents was fulfilled in the seesaw battle that ensued. Possessing a one-point lead, Chapman’s patented lock- down defense proved to be the Crusaders Achilles’ heel all night long. The Panthers limited UD to 34.4% from the field, including 16.7% from long distance. Chapman was also able to contain UDs two leading scorers, Ana Castillo and Kristy Malone (over 16 points per game), well below their average. Malone finished with 9 points and 5 boards, while Castillo added 6 and 9.
Ashley Shorts (12), Sarah Brands (12), and Melissa Nakamura (11) led the victorious Panthers in scoring.
The 13-12 Lady Crusaders travel to Colorado Spring, CO for the National Division Three Independent Championships next week for their final games of the season. UD will play two games from February 24-26. Check back for specific game times.
