Emory 78, Rochester 66

ATLANTA — Host Emory University shot a blistering 59% from the floor in the first half and that sparked the Eagles to a 78-66 victory over the Yellowjackets in men's basketball.

The Eagles hit 16 of 27 from the floor, 9 of 14 from three point range, and built a 45-27 lead.

"They were 9 of 14 from three." said Rochester coach Mike Neer. "They had as many (points) at halftime as we've been giving up (for an entire game)."

Rochester entered the game allowing opponents 54 points a game and holding foes to 34% shooting from the floor. Emory finished the game at 47.2% (25 of 53), 52.2% outside the arc (12 of 23). The 78 points is a high-water mark against Rochester this season as are the 12 three-pointers.

Spiros Ferderigos led all scorers with 31 points for Emory, including four treys. Johhny Pinto had 16 points and was five for five outside the arc. Jeff Hall was Emory's third double figure scorer with 13 points.

Mike Goia led Rochester with 24 points, hitting 11 of 21 from the floor. He also had a game-high six assists. Jon Onyiriuka was the only other Yellowjacket in double figures. He had 10 points and blocked a career-best five shots.

A layup by Goia pulled Rochester within 13-10 with 13:31 left in the first period. Eric Barvin sank a jumper, then assisted on a three-pointer by Pinto to ignite a 20-2 run over the next seven minutes as Emory seized control, 33-12.

"They were loose, they were aggressive," Neer said. "There were a couple of times in the second half where they opened the door for us a little (to get back in it), but we couldn't take advantage."

Rochester is 16-8 overall, 7-6 in the UAA. The Yellowjackets are tied for third place with NYU, which lost at home to Washington, 63-59. Carnegie Mellon won at Case, 80-75, to move two games ahead of the Yellowjackets and Violets. CMU and Washington are tied for the top spot.

The Yellowjackets can still impact the outcome of the UAA race. Rochester finishes its season at Carnegie Mellon next Saturday afternoon while Washington visits Chicago. "Being proactive on the road is imperative," Neer said.

"The group we have now has a chance to be a very good ballclub," Neer continued. "Twelve of 14 will be back, many in key positions."
