Elmhurst 89, Wheaton (Ill.) 65

Wheaton, Ill. — Elmhurst defeated the Wheaton Thunder men’s basketball team 89-65 tonight in Wheaton’s King Arena. Elmhurst improves to 17-8 overall and 9-5 in the CCIW, and the Bluejays secure a spot in next weekend’s CCIW Men’s Basketball Tournament. Wheaton is now 10-14 overall and 6-7 in league play.

Elmhurst led the Thunder 44-23 at halftime of tonight’s contest and remained in control throughout the second half. Wheaton shot 43.6% (24-55) from the field, with 35% (7-20) from three-point range and 76.9% (10-13) at the free throw line. Elmhurst had a 56.7% (34-60) field goal percentage, with 41.2% (7-17) from three-point range and 82.4% (14-17) from the charity stripe. Elmhurst held a 37-26 rebounding advantage, with a 10-7 edge on the offensive glass.

Senior guard Tony Bollier led the Thunder with 15 points and four assists. Sophomore John Mohan scored 12 points with four assists, while junior Johnnie Standard added 11 points on 5-for-6 shooting from the field. Junior Michael Fiddler scored 10 points with six rebounds and three assists. Freshman Andy Wiele added eight points, with seven rebounds and four assists.

All-American Chris Martin led Elmhurst with a game-high 26 points, adding eight rebounds and three steals. Nick Michael scored 20 points, with 13 rebounds and three assists. Chris Ihlenfeldt scored 15 points and Brian Lee added 12 points. Freshman Brent Ruch dished out nine assists and grabbed five rebounds.
