McDaniel 94, Washington College 89

WESTMINSTER, Md. — Host McDaniel College held off visiting Washington College, 94-89, in a Centennial Conference men's basketball game this afternoon in Westminster, MD. The Green Terror close out their season with a victory and finish with a 9-16 overall record and a 7-11 mark in conference play. The Shoremen, who will play in the upcoming Centennial Conference Playoffs, slipped to 12-13 and 10-8.

McDaniel held a slim 54-53 advantage with 14:40 left in the second half before going on a 14-2 run over the next 2:40 that gave the Green Terror a 68-55 lead with 12:20 remaining. The Shoremen would fight back and cut the McDaniel lead to three points at 84-81 with 3:05 left after junior forward Joey Breslin collected an offensive rebound and laid it back in. The Green Terror answered with five straight points over the next 55 seconds, highlighted by a Will Talesnick three-point basket. Washington would again cut the McDaniel lead down to three points at 89-86 with 17.4 seconds to go.

Josh McKay was fouled and connected on one of two free throws to make the game 90-86 with 15.5 seconds remaining. Breslin tried to inbound the ball after McKay’s made free throw, but Talesnick stole the pass and was fouled. Talesnick hit both free throws to push the lead to 92-86, but Washington senior guard Dustin Abbate hit a running three-point basket with 6.2 seconds left to cut the lead to 92-89. McKay was again fouled, but hit both free throws to seal the 94-89 McDaniel victory.

Talesnick finished with a game-high 31 points for the Green Terror and shot 11-for-17 from the field, including a 6-for-9 performance from beyond the three-point line. Mike Dipiero and McKay finished with 17 and 11 points, respectively.

Senior forward Jonathan Webb recorded a double-double with a team-high 23 points along with 10 rebounds and four assists in the loss for the Shoremen. In addition to Webb, four other Shoremen had double-digit scoring efforts. Breslin finished with 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Senior forward Scott Polyniak finished with 14 points, while senior guards Kyle Stem and Travis Moore finished with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

The Green Terror shot 52%, while the Shoremen shot 47% from the field in the game. The Green Terror connected on 8-of-14 three-point attempts, while the Shoremen were 4-for-18 from long range.

The Shoremen will host Muhlenberg at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday in the lone first round game of the Centennial Conference Playoffs.
