Mass-Dartmouth 88, Western Connecticut 76

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA — The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s men’s basketball team outscored Western Connecticut State, 12-4 in the final three minutes of the first half, built a 42-30 halftime lead, and went on to an 88-76 victory over the Colonials in the second game of a Little East Conference doubleheader at the Tripp Athletic Center Saturday afternoon.

Junior guard Chris Frazier ignited the run with a jump shot. Junior guard Devon Maiorano followed with another jumper, as did junior forward Stephane Abelard. Freshman point guard Reece Freeman’s three-pointer with 40 seconds left in the half made it 39-30, and Abelard’s long try at the halftime buzzer capped the run.

The Corsairs stretched their lead to 24 points, 74-50, with 5:15 remaining before WCSU rallied. Greg Cole hit a pair of three-pointers and converted three consecutive free throws as the Colonials cut the deficit to 12 points, 78-66, with 2:26 left. But UMass Dartmouth made eight free throws in the final minutes to preserve their lead.

“We played hard, and we did a good job defensively,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Brian Baptiste. “I was pleased that our kids worked as hard as they did. Steph stepped up and made some huge shots for us, and Reece made a few big steals that we turned into fast break points.”

Abelard led the Corsairs with 22 points, junior center Dan Holbrook had 17, Maiorano added 15 and sophomore guard A.J. Tavares added 10. Holbrook had eight rebounds as UMD out rebounded the Colonials, 40-38.

Cole led all scorers with 34 points, making eight of 17 shots from three-point range. Jamie Procino added 10 for WCSU.

UMass Dartmouth improved to 14-11 and 7-7 in the Little East Conference with the victory, while Western Connecticut State dropped to 13-12 and 5-9 in LEC play with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Plymouth State Tuesday evening in a first round Little East Conference playoff game. The Colonials will visit Rhode Island College in a first-round playoff game Tuesday night.
