Maryville (Mo.) 76, MacMurray 70

ST. LOUIS, Mo. — The Maryville University men’s basketball team held onto their first place tie in the SLIAC with a 76-70 win over MacMurray College on Saturday. The Saints improved to 10-3 in the SLIAC and will compete in their final conference game this Tuesday before heading off to the conference tournament on Thursday. The first place spot and host for the SLIAC tournament still remains up for grabs and will come down the season’s final contests.

It was raining three’s in Saturday’s contest versus MacMurray as the Saints went 13-for-22 (.591) from the three-point arc, a new school record for made three’s in a half. After 20 minutes the Saints were up 49-33, but the Highlanders would come back in the second half to challenge Maryville’s lead. With about three minutes left in the game, the Highlanders had cut their deficit to four and looked as though they could take the game. However, Maryville’s Matt Regan sealed the deal at the free throw line making 3-for-4 in the final seconds of the game and the Saints went on to record the victory.

Leading the way on offense was Maryville’s point guard Tim Elwell who recorded career-bests with both18 points and six rebounds during the contest. Elwell drained an impressive 5-for-9 (.556) from the behind the three-point line while also dishing out a team-high four assists.

Sophomore Mike Turpen also had a big night from the long range as he went on to sink four three’s in the game for 12 points and finished .571 from the three-point arc.

Also contributing to the win were Ben Hebl and Ryan Klein who added nine points a piece while pulling down four and five rebounds respectively and combining four five assists. Teammate Matt McCarthy led on the boards pulling down a team-high seven rebounds while also adding seven points.

MacMurray finished with three players in double-digits. Neil Compton, Ryan Eberhart, and Brad Cunningham all had 17 points a piece on the night while Zach Kowa and Eberhart led on the boards with seven rebounds each.

The Saints return to action Tuesday night when they take on Principia College at 8 pm at the Panther’s home court. If the Saints walk away with another victory and Blackburn loses to Fontbonne, then the Saints will grab first place in the SLIAC and host this weekend’s conference tournament.
