Greensboro (12-12, 7-5 USA South) erased a one-point deficit with a 7-2 run midway through the second half to take a lead it would not relinquish against Shenandoah (9-15, 1-11).
The win, coupled with NC Wesleyan’s loss at Averett and Methodist’s win over Christopher Newport, sends GC into the tournament as the No. 4 seed. They will host NC Wesleyan on Tuesday night at 7:30.
SU will be the No. 7 seed and draws regular season co-champion Averett in the first round. The Cougars earned a share of the title with their win today, but lose the No. 1 seed (and the first-round bye) due to Christopher Newport sweeping the season series between the two schools.
The SU/AU game will be a 7:30 start.
Saturday’s game, much like the first meeting of the two teams earlier this season, was a see-saw affair. The Hornets and Pride traded the lead seven times and were tied on two others – the final change came on a Justin Davis layup with 14:27 remaining.
Davis’ layup propelled his club to as much as a seven-point lead by the 10:56 mark, but SU was able to cut it to one following a Jeremiah Lawrence layup with 6:10 left. Steve Berg then scored five straight points for the hosts and the Hornets would get no closer than two points the rest of the way.
Junior Mouktar Fawehinmi led the visitors with 16 points while Lawrence had 15 to go along with a game-high 13 rebounds. This is also Lawrence’ 13th double-double of the season.
Michael McDuffie and Berg each had 19 for GC.
