Drew 80, Wilkes 62

Madison, NJ — Women’s Hoops Finishes Season with Win

The Drew women’s basketball team finished the 2005-06 campaign with a resounding win over Wilkes, 80-62. Behind 31 from Courtney Cunningham and a 12 point, eight rebound performance from senior Kathleen Foster, the Rangers (12-13, 6-8) jumped out to a big lead in the first half and held off the Lady Colonels (6-19, 2-12) to end on a high note.

Drew used a 7-0 run to go up 13-9 and take an advantage it would not relinquish for the rest of the game. Foster hit a backdoor lay-up off an assist from Melissa Kraft and Courtney Cunningham drained a long three in the spurt. Leading 27-21, the Rangers outscored the Lady Colonels 21-9 in the final five minutes of the half to take a 48-30 edge into the break. Maggie Marquis sparked the run with a free throw and a lay-up before during a charge and setting up Cunningham for a three-point play. Consecutive three pointers from Foster, Kraft and Kaitlyn Campi finished off the scoring in the first period.

The Lady Colonels opened the second half with a 10-4 run to close to 52-40, but the Rangers responded well to a TO taken by coach Dana Tamuccio and quickly pushed the lead back up to 19 on a three by Foster and buckets from Marquis and Kraft. The contest was all but finished when Cunningham hit back-to-back threes around the eight minute mark to give Drew a 71-47 advantage.

Even with Cunningham scoring 31, the Rangers had contributions from a number of players. Foster had 12 point in her final game in the Green and Blue and Maggie Marquis finished her season strong with 14 points and three steals. Laura Methvin score djust four points but grabbed 10 rebounds and handed out three assists. Genie Valantassis scored seven and recorded seven boards and Melissa Kraft overcame a tough shooting night to score seven, but record four steals and three assists.

Randi Corbo and Lacey Andresen both scored 16 for the Lady Colonels and Rena Bolin scored 10 to go with 13 rebounds.
