Coe 62, Simpson 59

Cedar Rapids, Iowa — Coe (19-6, 12-4 IIAC) defeated Simpson (12-13, 8-8 IIAC) 62-59 Feb. 18 to clinch a share of the Iowa Conference title in Cedar Rapids. The Kohawks led by as much as seven down the stretch before the Storm cut the lead to 60-59 on a David Ferezy layup with 2:16 remaining. The Storm had a chance to take the lead, but Ryan Hittenmiller missed a jumper. Kyle Kuenstling got the rebound and was fouled by Ferezy with 1:03 to go.

Kuenstling made 1-of-2 free throw attempts to give Coe a 61-59 lead. Jason Parkinson was fouled on the next Simpson possession, but he could not convert the front end of a 1-n-1 attempt. Coe ran the clock down to 17 seconds, but turned the ball over.

Simpson had a chance to tie the game, but Hittenmiller missed a jumper with six seconds remaining. Cory Deshaw was fouled on the rebound. Deshaw could have put the game away for Coe, but he only made 1-of-2 free throw attempts. Simpson called timeout with five seconds remaining. The Kohawks called a timeout to see the Storm offensive set. The Storm set up a play for Hittemiller, but his three-point attempt at the buzzer missed, giving the Kohawks the victory.

Coe's Cory DeShaw and Brad Axdahl each scored 17 to lead the Kohawks. Hittemiller became the 15th Simpson player to score 1,000 points in his career with 15 in the game. Hittenmiller has scored 1,011 points in his 78-game varsity career for the Storm. Matt Gilbert scored 10 for the Storm.

Simpson's 8-8 league mark earns the squad the #5 seed for the Iowa Conference Tournament. The Storm will travel to #4 Loras(17-8, 10-6 IIAC) Tuesday, Feb. 21 for an 8 p.m. matchup in Dubuque.
