Calvin 64, Alma 56

GRAND RAPIDS, MI — Calvin held off a determined effort by Alma to record a 64-56 victory Saturday afternoon in front of a homecoming crowd at the Calvin Fieldhouse.

Ranked 16th in the latest D3hoops.com Top-25 poll, Calvin (21-3 overall, 14-2 MIAA) finishes in second place in the final MIAA regular season standings. The Knights will be the second seed for next week’s MIAA Tournament and will host seventh-seeded Adrian (6-18) in a first round game Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m.

Calvin went through a five-minute scoreless drought in the second half with Alma (12-11 overall, 7-9 MIAA) closing to within six points at 51-45 with just over seven minutes left to play.

Calvin sophomore Lindsey Peuler broke the scoreless skein for the Knights however with a three-ball from the right wing to put the Knights up 54-45 with 4:55 remaining. Alma got no closer than seven the rest of the way as Calvin posted the win.

Junior forward Lisa Winkle led the Knights with 17 points and eight rebounds, connecting on 8-of-12 from the floor while freshman Kristi Brummel tossed in 10 points off the bench. Senior Sarah Winkle had eight points and five rebounds while sophomores Charis Larson and Erica Boonstra along with freshman Kelly Trewhella had seven points apiece.

Alma was led in scoring by Erica Philp with 16 points while Darcie Philp and Katey Peacock had 13 points apiece.

Calvin shot 52.1 percent overall including 59.1 percent in the second half. Alma held a 28-26 rebound edge but turned the ball over 21 times. Calvin also struggled with ball-handling, committing 22 turnovers but the Knights also collected 19 assists with Lisa Winkle and Trewhella chalking up four assists apiece.

With her 17-point effort, Lisa Winkle boosted her career scoring total to 1,207 points, allowing her to move past 1981 graduate Eileen Boonstra and into fifth place on the all-time Calvin scoring list.
